Some of your student's Math homework may look unfamiliar this year. I believe that students need to learn mathematics through meaningful classroom activities and discussion. We will be exploring several (new and different!) addition and subtraction models this year with the goal of building connections between your child's informal understanding of Math and and the formal knowledge of mathematics (and computation) that develops over time. Below I have linked to several videos for our addition and subtraction models. If your student is stuck please feel free to contact me and use these links to encourage our future Mathematicians!
Mental Math Strategies
These are the strategies I use in my head for math!
Decomposing numbersThis is a mental Math strategy where students can find many different ways to make a number. For Example 234 can be decomposed into 200 groups of 100, 30 groups of 10 and 4 groups of one.

CompensatingThis is a mental math strategy used to create "friendly numbers" or numbers that are easily manipulated mentally.
